Duties of a Churchwarden

The position of a Churchwarden is one of the oldest in the country (pre 13th century). A churchwarden is the Bishop's representative and is appointed by the Bishop in response to the vote of the Annual Church Meeting(1).
The duties of a churchwarden can be described as 'Ministry, Maintenance and Money'. This covers a multitude of items from the church grounds to the fabric(2) of the church and all parishioners; these include to:

Pastoral:

  • Have a 'duty of care' for all parishioners.
  • Deal with any problems which may arise during services.
  • Oversee and assist the Welcomers as required.
  • Assist and support the Incumbent(3) in his duties as required.
  • Deal with the public over church matters and handle queries during the absence of the Incumbent.
  • Produce rota’s to cover the duties required to keep the church running.
  • Attend as many services as possible each week.

Fabric and Finance:

  • Maintain the fabric of the church and grounds, motivating the congregation to participate in general repairs and maintenance of the church, grounds and hall.
  • Ensure the security of the church.
  • Understand and action faculties to cover major works to the fabric of the church.
  • Oversee the church accounts, and take responsibility in the absence of the Treasurer.

Terminology: [I] actually this is two meetings held at the same time. The Annual Vestry Meeting which elects the Churchwardens and the Annual Parochial Meeting which conducts ail other business. [2] Fabric means the building itself and all its contents. [3] The Vicar

Finally, to involve yourself in any area of the church and its running that you think needs you.
At first glance this list may appear daunting but rarely do things happen all at once and there are two Churchwardens! There are also talented, willing and helpful members of the PCC and congregation who are able to help out.
Basically, it is a case of 'being available' rather than 'doing everything'. No one expects a churchwarden to do everything outside the Sanctuary! But a warden needs to have a strong sense of responsibility and the ability to 'delegate and encourage'.
I feel privileged and honoured to serve as Churchwarden and would strongly recommend it as a very worthwhile challenge to anyone prepared to give that old fashioned word, commitment.
