War Memorial Gift

A statue of St Martin has been presented by Mr & Mrs Westerman as a memorial to their son, Kenneth who died on active service in the RAF on August 8th 1942(1). Kenneth was a regular worshipper at St Martin's and a Server for some years.
The memorial is most appropriate and will keep fresh the though of the sacrific made by Kenneth and others like him,who in their own way followed the example of St Martin the Warrior-Saint. The statue will be dedicated at St martintide.

(Note the statue was repainted in 1995 by

(1) The Commonwealth War Graves Commission list 1351072 Leading Aircraftman Kenneth Westerman of Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as loosing his life on 8/8/1941 and is buried in Alamein Memorial Cemetery Eygpt he was aged 20.

The Gale

The Gale of March 25-25 did us great damage. It blew down the Service Board(only recently painted) and nearly blew down the large noticeboard. It also whipped the roof of the boiler house and lavatories, smashing it completely. Our plumber Mr.Pratt, swiftly came to our aid (grateful thanks) and Mr Aykroyd is rectifying the resty of the damage.

Worse than the gale is damage continually done by mischievous children to the church wall by the bus stop For six mounths, children have been breaking down the wall. Several times the stones have been replaced. We have hesitated to put up a Police Notice, but if this nuisance continues we shall be obliged to take serious action.

Briardale Road

The inhabitants of Briardale Road and district are to be commended for the fine community spirit which they have built up. For a year or more they have held regular parties, entertainments and games for charitable causes and to promote neighbourliness and good -feeling Newcomers to the district have been welcomed, and made very much at home in surprising short time. The Briardale people have set a magnificent example in neighbourliness. Let us hope more districts will follow their example.
