A Look Around St Martin's
Worship >> A Look Around

The Present church was built in 1955 to replace the old "Tin Hut" that had been bought from Scar House reservoir (in Niddedale) in 1932. This was to be the first of five new churches built among the growing post-war housing estates around Bradford during the episcopate of Bishop Donald Coggan (later Archbishop of Canterbury) The Priest-in-charge at the time, Fr Robert Jones, organised collections around the estates and many gave 2/6d (12½p) the cost of each brick.
The church was designed by J Langtry-Langton of Oak Mount, the firm who were also respoonsible for the round First Martyrs RC Church in Heights Lane.
What was built was solidly built and the Church grew in numbers and in the affections of the local parish. The first Vicar Leonard Hardaker, employed the artist John Busby, to add-year by year-a number of pieces, two bas relief's for the pulpit and the old lectern, a highly original font using lenses from anti-aircraft sites located in area during WWII a pair of silver crosses and new silver candlesticks.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary (in 1995) of the church's dedication, the Church planed a thorough re-ordering of the interior. See the Magazine "Church Building", September 1996 for the alterations.
