| MARRIAGE | ||
|
The Church of England teaches that marriage is for life The faithful relationship of a man to a woman till death do them part as the old service used to say. However, we also recognise that some relationships do break down and are ended in a civil divorce. This is enormously distressing for all concerned, especially when there are children involved. When a partner starts a new relationship they may feel that they would like to explore the possibility of celebrating that love by being married in Church. This is now possible although a number of important conditions are attached. |

The most important of these is that the divorced partner has come to terms with the Events in the past and, where necessary, has made proper provision for his/her children. This will usually mean that the new couple have worked hard to understand all the circumstances of the past and have admitted those failings which contributed to the breakdown of the first relationship. At this point the Vicar at St Martins invites the new couple for an interview and, over a couple of hours, works with them to discover whether a service in Church is appropriate or not. This is never a very easy process but experience has taught us that the sharing of stories, however painful, helps a couple to move into the future with a realistic understanding of themselves and of Gods plans for their future. Where a second marriage is possible the Vicar will ensure that every help is given to make sure the wedding in Church is a really happy occasion. A new start given by a God who forgives all those who truly wish to live their lives in his love. | |
